Decorated Sloatsburg WWII Veteran George Heller Passes Away

Longtime Sloatsburg resident George Heller went through Hell and back during his days fighting for the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 101st Airborne Division during WWII.

Heller’s WWII adventure sounds like something out of Captain America — he participated in a few combat infantry air jumps but they all counted — one at Normandy before D-Day and one near Veghel for Operation Market Garden. And then, during the battle of the Bulge, Heller was hit by German counter-attack shrapnel and seriously wounded at Bastogne, France. Continue Reading

Local fire departments respond to Friday night Suffern Bridge Street house blaze

The Suffern Fire Department fought a fierce house fire Friday, assisting by mutual aid from surrounding fire departments. The blaze at Bridge Street is still under investigation, according to the Suffern Poice Department.

The Friday night Bridge Street fire in Suffern saw a house go up in flames while many area fire departments responded in mutual aid. The Suffern Police Department responded within a minute of the emergency 911 call that came in around 9:40 p.m. — but when police officers arrived, the house was already burning, with heavy flames coming from the top floor. The Place with the Yellow Brick Walkway: Sloatsburg’s Historic McCready House

The Robert and Mary McCready House on Route 17 in north Sloatsburg, also known as Westwind, was built in 1889 and is currently being restored to its former prominence by Edward Marse. The home is listed on the New York and National Registers of Historic Places, only the 3rd Sloatsburg residence to be listed.

Sloatsburger Ed Marse has nearly always had an interest in antiques and local history. Marse often visited the old Blue Barn Antiques while growing up, searching through the many valuables stored in the 70 foot long former livery barn on the Waldron property — currently under renovation by Michael Bruno and the Tuxedo Hudson Company. Sloatsburg Elementary School 5th Grade Fundraising Fun

Sloatsburg 5th graders are looking for dirty cars to clean.

The Sloatsburg Elementary School 5th grade class will set up a car wash at the school on Saturday, June 4, complete with cafe that will sell cookies and cupcakes. The fundraiser is a way for the class to raise money for class trips and other activities. Continue Reading
