Kyle Lynch watched the call go out for help from people hit by Hurricane Sandy and then did what he does best — respond. Lynch helped organize and rally local community support for a Hurricane Sandy relief effort based out of the SAC building on Washington Avenue. A lieutenant with the Sloatsburg Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Lynch said he was moved by the devastation witnessed in parts of New York and just wanted to help out. This past Saturday, the SAC building bustled as final preparations were made to gather up donations and drive them to Breezy Point in Rockaway, Queens, one of the hardest hit NY coastal communities. Suffern High School students kick off the drama season Thursday night at the school auditorium with Neil Simon’s farcical play Rumors.
Staged by Kathy Muenz, the play’s story involves a dinner party of friends who gather to celebrate their hosts’ 10-year wedding anniversary. But their host is locked away in an upstairs bedroom with an odd injury that causes the guests to create any number of stories to cover for their friend, the deputy mayor. What follows is an oddball evening full of mixups and one-liners, where the play’s central character is never seen but is the focus of attention. Everyone has something to hide. Continue Reading

Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright sent out a weather alert Wednesday evening, with calls from NY-Alert going out to village residents regarding the nor’easter now known as Athena. Sloatsburg residents were alerted that the National Weather Service is forecasting a snowstorm with snow accumulations of 3 – 6 inches.
The peak of the storm is estimated to be at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, with potential wind gusts between 40 and 60 mph.

On the national level, there was minimal controversy as President Barack Obama split the popular vote with his opponent Mitt Romney, but gathered enough electoral votes to handily win re-election. New York elected Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to serve another six years in Congress. Continue Reading
