Suffern High School students will entertain a bloody mess for the spring musical, due on stage at the end of March 2012. Set to perform Stephen Sondheim’s classic Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the large cast should provide a fun evening of theater. Auditions were finished last week and the final cast is complete, with David Stedge set to play the Demon Barber Sweeney Todd and Julia Castle playing Mrs. Lovett. A nice twist in casting has Daniela Feingold taking on the role of young Tobias Ragg, traditionally a male role. Benjamin Stevens and Victoria Trifiletti are cast as star-crossed lovers Anthony and Johanna. Continue Reading

Food drive bags appeared attached to Sloatsburg residents’ doors Sunday, promoting a holiday food drive for the local UMC Food Pantry. The plastic bags make it very easy for residents to contribute without even leaving their house. Just fill the bag with a few items and reattach to the front door for pickup before noon on Sunday, December 18. Continue Reading

While Sloatsburg celebrated the arrival of the Christmas Train Saturday for a bit of gift giving and holiday cheer, the streets of New York City ran red with thousands of Santas fully enjoying Santacon 2011.
Santas of all shapes, sex and sizes arrived on foot and by car and train to take part in what has become a world-wide phenomenon, with some 225 cities in nearly 35 countries participating. Continue Reading

Be on the lookout for the Christmas Train as it winds its way through Sloatsburg Saturday, December 10, delivering gifts to kids throughout the village. For nearly 60 years now, the Sloatsburg American Legion Post 1643 has partnered with other veteran groups, noteably, the Society of the 40 Men and 8 Horses, and recently with the Sloatsburg Fire Department, to provide holiday cheer with this annual community outreach event. The Sloatsburg Public Library is digging deep into the digital age with its new circulation and catalog upgrade, Enterprise. Due to go online this Thursday, December 8, the Enterprise catalog system, a product of SirsiDynix, one of the world’s largest providers of library management and software services, will be available throughout the entire Ramapo Catskill Library System. The Sloatsburg Village Board met for its annual reorganization meeting Monday night, December 5, where the Village Board made year-long, and in some cases, multi-year appointments, to an empty Village Hall. Sloatsburg — On a cold, clear morning a small group gathered at the Grove in Pine Grove Lakes, an acre-plus block of tall pines that is a favorite deer haunt during berry season. Two people worked a cement mixer near the basketball court, while deeper amid the trees Boy Scout Troop 2146 was busy as support crew for Justin Leanza, Troop Patrol Leader and Eagle Scout candidate, the highest individual award possible given by the Boy Scouts of America. The packed parking lot in front of the rambling white house across from the Sloatsburg Public Library meant another senior success. More than 40 people gathered on December 1 to take part in one of the popular Sloatsburg Senior Center’s outings. This particular event was the annual year-end holiday trip and included people from Sloatsburg as well as members of the Suffern and Ramapo senior groups. The destination was Staten Island and a day of dining, dance and song. Continue Reading
